Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived in a musical family on 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is a cousin and daughter to the singing sensation Dionne. In Newark, Whitney began singing with the church choir when she was a young child. When she was 15 years old, she joined her mother in singing background vocals on Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978. In 1981, she briefly worked as a fashion model, and was featured on the Seventeen album cover. She also performed back vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls. Her work as the vocalist featured in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several big record companies, like Arista, with which she signed in 1982 and continued to work for the remainder of her life. The album she released as her debut Whitney Houston was released in 1985 and quickly became the top-selling album by an artist who was a rookie. The album contained several hit songs such as How Will I Know You're Good to Me, Saving all My Love For you and The greatest Love of All. It helped her achieve seven US charts-topping singles in a row and beat the Beatles. The album sold three million copies in its debut season in the US as well as achieve a worldwide sales of 25 million, earning it the very first one of six Grammys. The Whitney follow-up in 1987 with the singles What Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to build on the success of her first album. It was, however, the 1992 movie The Bodyguard that solidified her status as one the world's most well-known artists. Though the movie was not very well received, nor was her performance, the music of the film's Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You reached the top spot on both the albums and singles charts in America for months. It sold 44,000,000 copies. In the same year, she got married to the former New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she had her only child their child Bobbi Kristina Brown in March 1993. Around this time, her well-documented addiction to drugs began. By 1996, the singer was using drugs daily.
